Meet Me, Greet Me

dahlkemperThe National Collaboration for Youth (an affinity group of the National Human Services Assembly)  did a nice job this week hosting a ‘meet and greet’ on Capitol Hill with Congresswoman Kathy Dahlkemper, a newly elected Democrat from Erie, Pennsylvania.   The afternoon event was held in the basement of the Capitol and was attended by about 35 representatives of youth-serving organizations.   It was obvious that Rep. Dahlkemper was new to Congress for two reasons:  (1) she arrived on time and (2) she brought written ‘talking points’ to help ensure her remarks were clear and concise.  Give her another month or so and she will be constantly running late and have no fear of being long-winded or off-message.

Rep. Dahlkemper is impressive.  She is a former Girl Scout leader, is involved in 4-H programs in her district, and expressed a commitment to promoting youth development policies and programs.   She wants to focus on child nutrition and obesity-prevention through her role on the Agriculture Committee and on promoting math and science education through her role on the Science and Technology Committee

Congresswoman Dahlkemper closed her remarks by sharing the personal story of establishing an arboretum in Erie.  In the center of the tree garden there is a rock with plaque that reads:  ”A society grows great when old men plant trees in whose shade they will never sit.”  She indicates that this quote will help guide her work in Congress.
